Cambodia frees anti-Thai rioters

Issued: 25 September 2003

Cambodia authorities have freed two students convicted and jailed for their part in January's anti-Thai riots in the capital, Phnom Penh.

The two had been convicted of offences including inciting racial hatred and were jailed early this month. However, after a petition of their lawyer, they received royal pardons from King Narodom Sihanouk.

After the riots in January, Thai-Cambodian relations were greatly damage, with Thailand downgrading diplomatic relations with Cambodia. Relations were eventually restored in April after Cambodia government paid Thailand almost $6 million in compensation for the damage of Thai Embassy.
