Thai-Cambodia border re-opened, but normalized ties to wait

Issued: 23 March 2003

The announcement of Thai-Cambodia border's re-opening was made on Friday after talks between Thailand's Foreign Minister Surakiart Sathirathai and Cambodian government minister Sok An. However, the full normalization of relations of the two countries still needs time to process step by step according to Thai Foreign Minister.

Earlier of the week of talks, Cambodian government has paid 5.92 million US$ to Thailand for damaged of Thai embassy in Phnom Penh during the anti-Thai riots on January 29. The payment covers only damages of the embassy, not including the Thai-owned businesses also destroyed during the violence. Separate talks over compensation for Thai businesses are underway.
