Water Level in Tonle Sap is Low in Dry Season Issued: 10 April 2001 Although the boat trip between Siem Reap and Phnom Penh can be interesting as it provides a chance for the foreign travelers to experience the scenic lifestyles of the Cambodian people along the river side, the trip is more or less adventurous. The boats are not of the Western standard and you can't expect much comfort. Some travelers sit on the roof to get fresh air and nice view though there are cushioned seats provided. The like and dislike of travelers seem to be at extremity. No life jacket available on board, so not recommended for those who cannot swim. During the dry season from April to mid June, the water level is very low and this represents some problems. First of all, access on Siem Reap side is quite a hassle because travelers may have to be trans-boarded to smaller vessels and it is a bit chaotic. Furthermore sometimes the boats get stuck in shallow sections in the middle of the lake. Instead of 4 hours ride, it takes 6.30 to 7:00 hours in the dry season. Another alternative mode to travel is by air. There are a number of flights operating between Siem Reap and Phnom Penh and it takes about 40 minutes to fly. Two airlines are operating i.e. the Royal Air Cambodge and Siem Reap Airways. [Check out the domestic flight schedule]. Return to Cambodia Travel News |
