TOURISTS ARRIVAL IN CAMBODIA
RISES BY 34% Issued: 11 February 2001 The foreign tourists arrival to Cambodia in the year 2000 has risen by 34% which is a new record high in Cambodia tourism history. The number of visitors reaches over 351,000 persons in 2000 as compared to approximately. 263,000 persons in 1999. Last year, most of the hotels in Siem Reap and several in Phnom Penh had enjoyed a very high occupancy rates. During the peak season of November and December, those hotels at the top-end are mostly fully booked months ahead and the situation seems to be extended to the first quarter of 2001. In the past, the hotels in Siemreap offered one flat rate throughout the year. If the number of tourists continue to increase at this pace and the room supply becomes scarce, there is a high possibility that some hotels may practice giving two or three tiered rates to reflect the low, high and peak seasons; a few has started to use this tiered scheme and several may follow. The impressive Khmer temples, especially the Angkor Wat, are the added charm to Cambodia. More tourists get attracted to this destination due to the increase in political stability and public safety. The now-defunct Khmer Rouge regimes was no longer a major threat. Several areas in Siemreap that used to be studded with landmines have been cleared, though no one can say all! Some Angkor temple sites such as Phnom Kulen, Kbal Spein (River of Thousand Lingas), Beng Melea, and etc. are open up for tourists access. Generally people becomes less afraid and foreign tourists feel more secure in this country. By Aphisit W. - Royal Exclusive Travel Return to Cambodia Travel News |
