Free Passes to Angkor Limited Issued:
05 June 2001
Cambodia has determined to limit the free Angkor Visit Pass to the Khmer temples in Siem Reap provinces.
In the past, the free passes are granted to the researchers, archaeologists, anthropologist, writers and government/ministerial officials while the
ordinary visitors have to pay some fees to enter the temple complex. Such fees varies depending upon the number of days required by the visitors such as
US$ 20 for a one-day pass, US$ 40 for 3-days and US$ 60 for 7-day ones.
Estimated that up to six to seven thousand people are enjoying these free passes every year; the government views it as a massive lost to their potential revenue.
The free passes will not be totally abolished, but the source said that the government would come up with a quota of 3000 free passes per year. This quota will be carefully allotted to different authorities and parties concerned.
