Landmine Museum in Siem Reap, Cambodia

Issued: 16 March  2001

The Landmine Museum, founded by a former Khmer Rouge soldier named Aki Ra, is facing a closure sentence by the Cambodian local authority.

Aki Ra had collected military equipments during his service to the Khmer Rouge and open this museum in the outskirts of Siem Reap to display several deactivated ordnance.

Although Aki Ra obtained a license from the Defense Ministry to open the museum, the local authority charged him of going beyond the restriction to display the "inappropriate" materials.

The chief of military policeman said that such should be carried out by the military and not by the civilians.

Any order to close the museum need the court approval. If Aki Ra lose the case, his museum will not only be shut down, but he also faces a jail sentence.

Currently, the Landmine Museum still remains open and is becoming more popular among the foreign visitors.
